How a water main-pipeline is installed

A water main or pipe is the principal means for conveying water to residential and business customers. A water main is usually installed with a trench digger or backhoe. Pipes range in size from 2 to more than a foot in diameter; trenches widths are dug based on the pipe size. Trench depths generally allow for approximately three feet of fill dirt to cover the water main to protect the pipe and water from freezing temperatures. Pipes can be made of cast iron, ductile iron, prestressed concrete or PVC. Tennessee American Water employees are hard at work each day maintaining and upgrading the distribution system to ensure water mains do their job. Making the necessary investment in this kind of infrastructure ensures there is high quality, reliable water service.
